Pelvic Floor Therapy

What is Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Prevalence of pelvic floor disorders are very common. About 24% of women have pelvic floor related symptoms including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse. Even though pelvic floor dysfunction is extremely common, women still often struggle to find the help they need to address the symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Usually people with pelvic floor issues are turning to doing kegels exercises from google searches which may or may not be right for everyone. Assessment of pelvic floor muscles and customizing treatment plans based on your body is extremely important to find out the cause and establish the right kind of treatment goals.

Pelvic floor therapy can be helpful in an array of symptoms not just limited to incontinence and prolapse. Other diagnoses and symptoms such as pelvic pain with menses, pain with sexual activity, recurrent yeast infections or urinary symptoms, vaginismus, heavy bleeding, interstitial cystitis, and even low back pain can originate from pelvic floor muscle dysfunction.

Furthermore, pelvic floor dysfunction is not just limited to physical symptoms but people also tend to hold onto past trauma including physical, sexual, mental/emotional traumas in their deepest part of the pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor work can be profound in this area of healing for some people, however, caution should be adopted if people are not ready to actively work on the pelvic floor internally with a history of trauma.
